From Sheila:
I first met Helen, my future mum-in-law, 48 years ago. She immediately accepted me as one of the family and treated me not only as a daughter but as a friend. We spent many a Wednesday together – her half-day off work – going round the shops, and having lunch and coffee. When her grandchildren, Christopher and Helen, arrived she loved them deeply and they loved her deeply in return. I have many fond memories, which I will always cherish. I will miss her love and warmth.
   Love from Sheila

From Christopher:
I will miss my Granny Hall very much, she wasn’t your average granny. When child-minding us she would let us stay up late, join in activities that other grannies wouldn’t dare to, and would always think outside the box when birthdays or Christmas came. She was the focal point of the Hall family, and Cregagh Road was the most amazing place to me, my sister Helen and my two cousins Kellie and Hollie. My wife Emma-Claire and our two boys got to know her as much-loved ‘Granny Hall’ too.
Love from Chris, Emma-Claire, Jackson & Haydyn

From Helen:
Dear Granny,
You taught me.
You taught me how to think outside the box, like the time in the town you pretended to try on clothes in a shop just to use the cubicle and its mirror as a ‘beauty parlour’, so you could retouch your lipstick and respray your hair.

You taught me how to be creative, like when you gave me a torch for Easter, but not just any torch, a torch with its plastic package prised open and stuffed full of mini Easter eggs and money.

You taught me about staying hip and modern, like the time you came into my bedroom to me and my friends, and told us you recognized the music we were playing and that, indeed, Jim Morrison was a ‘good-looking man’. We agreed and you danced.

You taught me about the importance of independence with your years of working in Reids. But this is only in hindsight; at the time, I was just excited about getting my new winter boots and a bag stuffed full of more Reids rulers, Reids balloons and Shoe People chocolate bars, than any ‘normal’ customer would get.

You demonstrated how to be kind to others. You always had a smile for me, a kind word for me, a soft cuddle for me. And you always smelled like Yardley and lavender.
Thanks for being my Granny,
Love from your granddaughter, and namesake, Helen
